Worship

We believe that worship consists of many actions and should go in only one direction. Worship is not just a song or some melody that sends chills down your spine; Worship should be our reasonable response to God’s radical devotion towards us that He demonstrated on the cross of Calvary. Worship has so many different faces and can be expressed in a million different ways. For instance, the way a husband treats his wife and the way that children respond to their parents is and can be worship, as well as the way you work on your job and the way you work at school. Also raising hands, sitting, dancing, singing, bowing, laying prostrate (face down), cleaning, tithing, and serving are forms of worship. Really, God calls for our lives to be worship to Him and for Him. He does not desire an hour long show from us on Sunday mornings, but true devotion seven days a week. It is simply a privilege that we are able to come together once or twice a week and corporately worship a holy God. Some forms of corporate worship you may encounter at Greenbriar come straight from Gods word and are permissible if conducted in a reverent, respectful way.

They are as follows:

Sitting- We find rest and comfort by sitting and delighting in Jesus and what He has done for us. We base this belief of worship in Luke 10:38-42.

Standing- Another form of worship that is found is scripture and has transcended through time into a modern expression of respect. When we are in the presence of most men and women who command great respect we stand to our feet in appreciation when they honor us with their presence. This form of worship is based in 2 chronicles 20:19 and Psalms 135:2-3.

Bowing or lying prostrate- When bowing or lying face down before God, an individual is showing that you have abandoned pride and are fully submitted to His authority. The scripture reference for this form of worship is found in 2 Chronicles 7:1-3 and Psalms 95:6.

Tithing- Tithing is biblical if used and acted upon in the right context. We do not tithe so that God will bless us financially. We tithe out of grateful hearts, expressing our gratitude to a holy God who owns it all anyway. Giving must be worship, cheerful, and trusting. The scripture references that support this form of worship can be found in 2 Corinthians 9:7, Luke 6:38, and Malachi 3:8-12.

Serving- An action form of worship that can take place Monday through Sunday and can be as simple as helping a neighbor with his or her yard work, opening a door for a stranger or taking someone's tray at the restaurant. We see a beautiful picture of Christ serving His disciples at the Passover and also washing their feet. The scripture reference here is Matthew 26:26-29 and John 13:1-20.

Singing- An artistic style of worship that can be done individually or corporately. It can be done in  moments of great joy as well as sadness. It is simply an awesome gift that God has poured out on creation to allow us to connect with Him in harmony. The scripture references can be found in Psalms 144:9, Romans 15:9 and Ephesians 5:19.

Fasting- An emptying form of worship that ordinarily involves refraining from the consumption of food. During fasting, you empty yourself of selfish thinking and selfish motives in order to direct your attention to God, the Father, who is our sole source of provision. The scripture references can be found in Joel 2, John 3:30, and Isaiah 58:6.

Praying- A form of communication with God where we can be fully honest with ourselves and with God. The word says that He knows what we need  before we even ask or think it, but He still says we have not because we ask not. The scripture reference for prayer comes from 1 John 5:14.
